Re: Ranger 9mm & shotgun ammo now in stock
I'm still waiting on the 9mm +P+ I ordered March 11th.
When I placed the order it showed it was in stock. Good Luck. |

Stacking orders up for months seems to be a tactic used by online gun brokers. I'm still waiting for a Ruger LCP I ordered 3 months ago that was advertised, 'Hurry! In stock!' (different website). I've been carefully watching their back order numbers grow and yet, almost weekly, they'll show 4 in stock for a few hours only. I called the company last week and a lady admitted they were just now filling orders from August 2008! I'm pretty sure my CC expiration date will rollover before I get my order. |

Yup. Ordered in mid March actually and had just about forgotten about it. Got some boxes of the 9mm Ranger law enforcement stuff. Paid $194 delivered and I see some on gunbroker for $300 for 500 rounds. Think I'll stash a bunch away and take a look again in a few years.

Re: Ranger 9mm & shotgun ammo now in stock
I bought a 500 case of 147 gr. Ranger T 9mm hollow-point ammo from OMB back in June with free shipping, and just received it last week. I am glad I bought it when I did, because now you have to prove that you are one of the "thin blue line" in order to place an order for this stuff.

I prefer the 127 grain +P+ stuff myself. Gets me as close as possible to .357 SIG ballistics but in a 9mm. Gregg |

Re: Ranger 9mm & shotgun ammo now in stock
I assume you are talking about a change in some particular vendor's policies. There are no legal reasons for such a thing. Winchester (among others) has tried to restrict some of their ammo to LEO only but there are lots of vendors who find ways around that.
I prefer the 127 grain +P+ stuff myself. Gets me as close as possible to .357 SIG ballistics but in a 9mm. Gregg Yeah, its just OMB's policy now, including 124 and 127+p+ hollow point Ranger T ammo. Even though my CZ 75 B and 75 D PCR should be able to handle the +p+ ammo, I was afraid of causing undue wear and tear during practice with said ammo, so I figured modern 147 gr would kill plenty good while being easy on the barrels. I burned thru three "test" boxes initially, and liked the way it shot, so I ordered the case, thinking I would be able to shoot some from time to time, then store the rest. Now I am storing the whole 10 box lot since OMB will no longer sell to me. I have not been able to find this RA9T ammo for sale to the public anywhere else, so if any of you have, please post it here. Winchester does make a similar USA9JHP2 147 gr that is for public consumption. I don't know the difference between that and RA9T, but I was not able to get any sites that have that "in-stock" either, so I had just given up on trying to get some for a test. This post has re-ignited my quest. Thanks. |
Re: Ranger 9mm & shotgun ammo now in stock
The bullet used in the Ranger T loads is not the same as the one used in the 'USA' loads. The T bullet gives you, well, everyone has seen an expanded T bullet. The 'USA' brand personal protection bullet gives you a more traditional mushroom type of expansion. The 'USA' PP bullet is the same bullet used in the Bass Pro SXZ line (with lubalox coating added), the silvertip line (with whatever they put on those for the silver finish), and is one of the WW or White Box loads sold in some places on occasion. I've never seen any performance tests done with the 147gr bullets, but most of the Win PP bullets do quite well compared to 'premium' bullets of other companies in head to head expansion and penetration tests.
OMB will still sell you ammo, just not anything in the Ranger line. Their prices might be ok for someone looking for some practice ammo, but only with a free shipping code and no chinamarts close by. **sending PM to New2This** |
Re: Ranger 9mm & shotgun ammo now in stock
"T" is for Talon, as in Black Talon...as in Ranger "T" Series ammunition
I have some ballistics charts and pictures of Win 147 JHP (USA) somewhere... The 147gr load was issued to L.A. County Sheriff deputies, and San Diego PD a few years back, I believe... |

FBI test are your best bet if you are looking to compare performance. The latest stuff isn't here, but there are a bunch of the standbys. http://demigodllc.com/~zak/firearms/fbi-pistol.php |
Re: Ranger 9mm & shotgun ammo now in stock
Beg pardon...the wet phone book is a valid as any other to compare relative expansion. No other criterion was tested.
And exactly WHAT does "jello-shooting" prove. Never met anyone of that consistency...yet. Street effectiveness? Marshall and Sanow. Seems much more relevant to me, even the Strasbourg tests on live goats (if real). |
Re: Ranger 9mm & shotgun ammo now in stock
The gelatin allows one get an idea of what kind internal damage the bullet will do. Strasbourg tests show frangible rounds as the clear winner which is not corroborated by real life experience. Gelatin testing on the other hand has a much better track record of gaging performance. Does it accurately simulate the human body? Nope. However, it has a better track record than the Strasbourg tests.
And no, I am not a Fackler-ite, nor do I put much stock into Marshall and Sanow. I don't think we can do much better than gelatin. Simulating the rib cage would be a significant improvement for starters. If you look at the FBI data, you can see that expansion is not the end of bullet performance. If all you wan to see if expansion, by all means use water jugs, gelatin, phone books, whatever. All I was saying is that there is more to performance and gelatin allows you to see this. |
Re: Ranger 9mm & shotgun ammo now in stock
It was just a picture for Pete's sake...
Data is just that...data. IT IS DRAWING THE WRONG CONCLUSIONS THAT CAN GET YOU KILLED. FBI reports show 16% of LE killed in the line of duty were shot with their OWN weapon. Jello tests didn't help them at all. Another FBI study shows the most common killer of cops...22LR, 25 auto, 32 auto. Be sure and include that in your "data". FBI conclusions: Officers placed way too much confidence in the ability of their vests to stop bullets. FTW, I believe M&S conclusions agree with Strasbourg "data" that light and fast hollowpoints were most "effective" for the "mythical" one-shot-stops. Not saying I agree or disagree. I'll say again, I never met anyone built of "jello"... Bone, tendon, muscle...moving and pumped on adrenaline, meth or crack. Good luck. |

You guys are shopping at the wrong site.
Try gunbroker. Use 'Winchester Ranger' in your search... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=148642650 Winchester Ranger 9mm 147 gr T series Law Enforcement buy it now price of $341 (s&h included in this price). Case of 500. Not a great price, but not a deal killer either. Lots of it out there. Gun Broker ammo sellers are a fairly honest bunch. Days of cheap ammo are pretty much over for now. Might come back one day. Or not. |

Man, that's a deal killer for me. My last case of 500 RA9T from OMB cost jut $189 shipped. So, OK, I retract my original statement about there being no ammo available; there is plenty of ammo out there if you are willing to bend-over, grab your ankles, and spell R-U-N for the supplier. |
